Filed Under: Equipment $$$ Posted Thu Dec 4, 2008, 4:27 PM ET By Kim Wilson Long before the iPod gained dominance as the defacto portable media device, audiophiles were voicing their concerns about where the music world might be headed with the popularity of lowfi MP3 music files. For some the introduction of Krell's S-300i Integrated Amplifier, which interfaces with the iPod, could be seen as a "if you can't beat them join them" strategy. A different perspective would be that the iPod is no longer considered a lowfi product. Filed Under: Equipment How To Posted Mon Aug 25, 2008, 8:40 PM ET By Barbara Gonzalez Simple ways to set free your photo, music, and video libraries for the “10-foot” home theater experience. Like most people, I have a digital camera, and I also recently bought a high-definition camcorder. They take detailed, gorgeous pictures that I upload onto my computer. And that’s where they’ve been locked up—in hard drive prison. I’ve also started downloading movies and TV shows that I’ve missed from the Internet. I sit at my desk and watch them on my relatively small computer monitor. But it’s not very comfortable or satisfying. And it’s particularly difficult for friends and family to crowd around my computer to see photos of my last vacation or watch the video of my son’s graduation. I transfer my favorite tunes from my computer to my iPod. But when I relax, I want to curl up on the couch cushions and listen to music on my full-range speakers so I can hear the details of the music. I also want to have slide shows for my friends and family (like we did when we had slide projectors) in the comfort of my living room. And the only place I ever want to watch movies is on my 1080p plasma. Home theater is a term that seems to mean different things to different people. However, its true meaning is pretty simple: A home theater is a theater in your home. Technically speaking, a home theater should also re-create an immersive cinematic experience, complete with a large-screen image and a full surround sound system. Filed Under: Equipment Posted Sun Sep 9, 2007, 11:12 PM ET By Darryl Wilkinson High-end speaker maker Burmester, US introduced a trio of slim speakers at CEDIA. All three speakers – the B30, B25, and B20 – are three-way, full-range, floorstanding models. Each uses a new air motion transformer (with a frequency range of 2,700 – 45,000 Hz) that's mounted in a small horn. This high-frequency driver design is said to be highly efficient and highly dynamic. The speakers also share a similarly engineered side-firing oval woofer with a powerful Ferrite magnet system. The oval shape helps maximize the cone's surface area while making it possible to construct a narrow speaker cabinet. Filed Under: Equipment Posted Thu Aug 16, 2007, 7:57 PM ET By Mark Fleischmann Home theater is the integration of big-screen television and surround sound. But how often do you see the two product categories integrated with each other? That's what makes a new system from Atlantic Technology and Epson so special. The Ensemble 1080 triple-LCD projector comes in a cradle that also includes two full-range rear-surround speakers. Three front speakers are built into the housing for the 100-inch retractable screen, their horn-loaded tweeters and 4.5-inch woofers aimed downward toward the listening position. There is also a separate 10-inch subwoofer, which contains amplification for the whole system, and a sleek controller, which serves as both preamp-processor and DVD drive. At a demo in New York, Ensemble actually sounded good! Pricing will be $4999 for the 720p version and $6999 for the 1080p version. The system will be sold exclusively through a/v specialty dealers and custom installers.
