I'm not sure when 3D became so popular both in the theater and at home. However, It's a technology we've been toying with since the 1950's but by all indications it's about to come of age...quickly.

The latest 3D news comes from the Blu-ray Association announcing their plans to incorporate 3D into the high-def format. The format's technical capabilities and storage capacity make the format ideal for providing 3D content. Along with motion picture studios, IT and consumer electronics manufacturers, the association wants to create a uniform specification to ensure consistent delivery of 3D content across the platform. At minimum it will require delivery of 1080p resolution to each eye and backward compatibility for discs and players. All 3D discs will include a 2D version of the film plus players will be able to play 2D and 3D material.
